Women’s month with those who paint our world

International Women's Day is not only a global holiday that we celebrate on 8th March when women’s social, economic, cultural, and political achievements are being highlighted. We figured it would be an excellent moment to acknowledge their undeniable contributions to the arts and display their ongoing authentic voice and legacy. Women have been very significant in shaping many fields of art, often going against gender norms and expectations of the society because they wanted to express their creativity and vision. In honour of International Women’s Day, we want to put a spotlight on some of our favourite female artists from around the world, whose talents and achievements continue to inspire generations. While we mention some of the greatest artists, we mustn’t forget the main message – every one of us is a masterpiece by herself and a sole artist and creator of her life.

Women in Literature

Women authors have given us some of the most profound, insightful, and revolutionary works in literature.  Great intellectuals like Simone de Beauvoir and George Sand were breaking all the boundaries in their lifetime with some of the most trailblazing works in perspective of feminism and women’s rights. Contemporary voices like Bell Hooks and Roxane Gay continue to inspire the readers with fresh perspective on feminism, and writers of novels like J.K. Rowling entertain millions around the world with their compelling narratives and rich storytelling.

Women Sculptors

Although sculpting was always predominantly a man’s field in history, there have been important women influences who broke new ground through their independent lifestyles and emphasis on career over marriage and motherhood. In the realm of sculpture, women like Augusta Savage and Camille Claudel have transcended the traditional roles assigned to them in their times, creating works that evoke emotion and provoke thought. Their sculptures range from the delicately expressive to the boldly abstract, demonstrating the versatility and depth of women's contributions to this art form.

 Women Dancers

Dance has been another field where women have not only excelled but also revolutionized the art form. Pioneers like Martha Graham and Isadora Duncan broke away from traditional dance norms to create new expressions of movement that spoke to the human experience. In ballet, figures like Anna Pavlova have demonstrated their uniqueness and inspired a new generation of dancers with their extraordinary talent and resilience.

Women Costume Designers

In the world of costume design, women like Edith Head have been monumental in defining the visual aesthetics of film and theatre which was confirmed with eight Oscars. Their designs are not just about clothing but are essential to the storytelling process, adding depth and authenticity to the characters and the story.

Women Painters

Diverse perspectives of women artists also enriched the world of painting. Hilma af Klint, Frida Kahlo and Georgia O'Keeffe are just a few of the women painters who have used their canvases to express their inner worlds, their experiences, and their perspectives on society, while pioneering completely new artistic approaches. Their works immensely inspired a lot of their male fellow artists and created a path for new art directions.

Women Architects

In architecture, women like Zaha Hadid and Kazuyo Sejima have broken through the glass ceiling to design some of the most iconic buildings in the world. Their innovative approaches and distinctive styles have contributed significantly to the landscape of modern architecture, challenging conventions and introducing new possibilities. This helped them secure their own Pritzker Architecture prize, an annual award to honor architects whose built work demonstrates a combination of those qualities of talent, vision and commitment.

A Call to Celebrate and Inspire

Every day, but especially on International Women's Day, let's celebrate women who have contributed to the society by showing their beautiful uniqueness. In a male-dominated industry, women are often the rule breakers and change makers using their talent to challenge the status quo. Their creativity, determination, and vision have not only enriched the world, but also paved the way for future generations of women. By recognizing and celebrating their achievements, we continue to break down barriers in hope of creating a world where women's contributions are celebrated and valued. Let’s make the world a safe space for women’s expressiveness, because all our voices should be heard equally. In hope that tomorrow we finally realise we are the artists of our lives, we invite you to unite in diversity. May we all always support each other, cheering one for another.
