Eyeliner: How to draw & apply it correctly

Eyeliner is a great way to highlight the eyes. It was one of the first make-up products and is still used all over the world.

But which eyeliner to choose? And more importantly, how to apply it correctly?

We answer these and many other questions for you in our article.

We asked make-up artists: which eyeliner to choose?

Eyeliners come in many forms. Depending on your application skills and the shape of your eyelid, you probably prefer a certain type.

Pencil eyeliners

As their name suggests, pencil eyeliners look just like that. You simply need to open the cap and you are ready to draw thin lines on the eyelid. Along with liquid, the most commonly used eyeliner is the pencil one.

Gel eyeliners

Gel eyeliners come in small plastic or glass containers and are applied with a brush. The brush is very important when applying a gel-type eyeliner – it must be firm and compact for maximum precision.

Liquid eyeliners

Liquid eyeliners are the most fluid and liquid, so they require a steady and trained hand. However, they are the easiest to apply the thinnest precise lines you want.

Eyeshadows

Instead of real eyeliner, you can also use eyeshadows. All you need is an eyeshadow in the desired colour and a thin, precise brush. This method is good for beginners because it gives more room for error, especially with lighter eyeshadows.

Eye pencil

You can achieve almost the same result with an eye pencil, just make sure it's well sharpened. The pencil is also good if you want a slightly messier look, for example, a smokey eye.

How to correctly apply eyeliner & draw lines?

Although applying eyeliner may seem intimidating at first, all you need is a steady hand and a little practice for it will look great within days.

Before applying the eyeliner, we recommend that you apply a primer or a concealer to the eyelid to make the eyeliner more permanent.

Try to apply your eyeliner like this:

  1. Place the eyeliner along the upper lash line so that it is as close as possible to your eyelashes. Then start applying the eyeliner from the middle of the eyelid towards the outer edge of the lash line
  2. After you finish applying to the outer edge of the lash line, line up the inner edge of the upper lash line and connect this line with the first line you made. With precise strokes, connect both lines and fill them as needed so that you have one solid, even line on the lids above the upper lash line.
  3. If you’re going for winged eyeliner, just follow the curve of the outer lash line upwards from the outer corner of the eyelid. Then fill in the wings with the rest of the line as needed.

Types of eyeliner

Waterproof eyeliners

More durable than ordinary eyeliners, waterproof eyeliners will not streak and will remain stable even in water. The only drawback is that they are a little harder to remove than regular eyeliners.

Coloured eyeliners

Eyeliners in all the colours you can imagine are more and more in trend. You can now buy yellow, green, purple or other eyeliner.

Shimmer eyeliners

In addition to various colours, eyeliners also come in a shimmery version, which is ideal for those occasions when you want to stand out.

Bonus tip: how to apply douche on drooping eyelids

Putting eyeliner on lowered eyelids is twice as difficult precisely because of the small space between the lower part of the eyebrow and the eyelid. The main disadvantage of drooping eyelids is that the lids are almost invisible when the eyes are open, and therefore the eyeshadow and eyeliner on them can be hard to notice.

However, there is a way you can put eyeliner on a drooping eyelid to make it look nice and noticeable.

First, use a cream eyeliner and a thin and precise brush to easily control the shape and volume.

Second, when applying eyeliner, keep your eyes open. This will give you the best view of where the creases are.

The last thing you need to pay attention to is the wings. To make it as effective as possible, draw a very thin, short line above which the eyelid will be visible. Then fill in the wings and connect them with the rest of the eyeliner.
