True lavender or medicinal lavender is the Queen of essential oils. It is also the co-founder of modern aromatherapy. This shrub originally spread across the Mediterranean. But nowadays it is cultivated worldwide, wherever it can find optimal conditions for growth. True lavender boasts a sweet, floral scent, which is far from pungent or intrusive. It is tender, discreet, soft. Alas, medicinal lavender often ends up in the same basket with other lavender and lavandin varieties. Its name is frequently used carelessly and casually to refer to both real and fake true, medicinal lavender, which pays lip service to its rightfully earned name and reputation! Namely, the genus Lavandula consists of over forty different species and a great number of hybrids. But, mind you, there is only one true, medicinal lavender – Lavandula angustifolia. After all, there is only one queen. Not to belittle other lavenders, but it is essential to distinguish true lavender from others. Different varieties have different benefits. With all due respect, but only true lavender essential oil will produce the desired effect.
Only true lavender essential oil will have a calming and soothing effect when inhaled. Just a few drops in the diffuser will reduce stress and anxiety. Pouring a few drops onto your pillow and linen will help you sleep better. In massage oils it will relieve tension and soothe cramps. Mixed into moisturizers or rubs, it will ease skin irritations. And added to a relaxing bath it will make the whole experience even more enjoyable. It is one of the rare essential oils that can be used undiluted directly on the skin. A few drops of this caring oil applied onto cracked skin, open wounds or bug bites will show you its enormous power. As a matter of fact, a drop of medicinal lavender will never be a drop too much. Far from it!
